We look forward to introducing Calgary youth to the rich traditions of Japanese martial arts and sharing the skills, discipline, and enjoyment that come from training together.

Calgary Rakushinkan is pleased to be participating in Sport Calgary's All Sport One Day at the University of Calgary on Saturday, June 20, 2026.
We will be offering two introductory lessons exploring different aspects of traditional Japanese martial arts. These sessions are designed for beginners and provide a hands-on introduction to movement, strategy, balance, and body mechanics.

Lesson 1: Introduction to Kenjutsu
The first session introduces the fundamentals of classical Japanese swordsmanship.
Participants will explore:
Basic sword strategy
Fundamental sword movements
Footwork and body positioning
Distance, timing, and awareness
Traditional training methods
Through partner exercises and movement drills, students will gain insight into how Japanese swordsmen developed coordination, focus, and efficient movement.

Lesson 2: Structure, Connection, and Grappling
The second session explores principles found in Japanese grappling arts, including concepts that influenced modern Aikido.
Participants will explore:
Posture and body alignment
Connection and balance
Movement from the centre
Basic grappling principles
Cooperative partner exercises
Rather than relying on strength, students will learn how structure, timing, and body mechanics can be used to create effective movement and control.
