Both sessions are suitable for complete beginners. Participants do not need any prior martial arts experience, and all instruction will be conducted in a safe and welcoming environment.

Calgary Rakushinkan is pleased to be participating in Sport Calgary's All Sport One Day at the University of Calgary on Saturday, June 20, 2026.

We will be offering two introductory lessons exploring different aspects of traditional Japanese martial arts. These sessions are designed for beginners and provide a hands-on introduction to movement, strategy, balance, and body mechanics.

Lesson 1: Introduction to Kenjutsu

The first session introduces the fundamentals of classical Japanese swordsmanship.

Participants will explore:

  • Basic sword strategy

  • Fundamental sword movements

  • Footwork and body positioning

  • Distance, timing, and awareness

  • Traditional training methods

Through partner exercises and movement drills, students will gain insight into how Japanese swordsmen developed coordination, focus, and efficient movement.

Lesson 2: Structure, Connection, and Grappling

The second session explores principles found in Japanese grappling arts, including concepts that influenced modern Aikido.

Participants will explore:

  • Posture and body alignment

  • Connection and balance

  • Movement from the centre

  • Basic grappling principles

  • Cooperative partner exercises

Rather than relying on strength, students will learn how structure, timing, and body mechanics can be used to create effective movement and control.
